Defending Local Democracy Through Investigative Truth
The Simi Valley Ledger was founded in 2026 to address a pressing local need: independent, rigorous reporting on the public decisions that shape life in Simi Valley. We focus on the institutions closest to residents—City Hall, local boards and commissions, public agencies, schools, development decisions, public spending, infrastructure, and the policies that affect neighborhoods, families, businesses, and taxpayers.
A Local Response to a Local Information Gap
Too often, consequential local decisions receive limited scrutiny. Public meetings can be sparsely covered, complicated budgets can go unexplained, and major policy choices can move forward before residents have a meaningful opportunity to understand their impact. When local government operates without sustained public attention, accountability suffers and community trust erodes.
The Simi Valley Ledger was created to help close that information gap. We believe residents deserve reporting that goes beyond official statements, meeting summaries, and public-relations messaging. Our role is to ask informed questions, examine the public record, verify claims, and explain what government action means in practical terms for the people who live and work here.
Investigative Journalism as Local Public Service
We treat local journalism as an essential public service. Our reporting is grounded in document review, public-record research, meeting coverage, source verification, and clear explanation. We investigate not only individual controversies, but also the systems, financial decisions, oversight practices, and administrative processes that can affect public confidence and community outcomes.
Our work may examine:
City budgets, contracts, procurement, and use of taxpayer funds
Land-use, housing, development, transportation, and infrastructure decisions
Public-agency governance, transparency, and compliance with open-government obligations
School, public-safety, environmental, and community-service issues
The real-world effects of local policy on residents, neighborhoods, and businesses
We do not begin with conclusions. We follow the evidence, distinguish verified facts from opinion, seek relevant responses from public officials and affected parties, and aim to present complex local issues in language residents can use.
Accountability Close to Home
Accountability is most meaningful when it is close enough for citizens to see and influence. Decisions made by local elected officials, appointed boards, agencies, and contractors can determine how public money is spent, what is built, which services are delivered, and whether government remains responsive to the community it serves.
The Simi Valley Ledger exists to make those decisions more visible. We believe transparency is not hostility toward government; it is a condition of effective, trustworthy government. Careful reporting helps identify problems early, recognizes good public service where it occurs, and gives residents the information needed to ask questions, participate in public meetings, and advocate for sound solutions.
Empowering an Informed Community
An informed public is the strongest safeguard for local democracy. The Ledger provides residents with timely, well-documented reporting so they can understand the issues before them and participate meaningfully in civic life.
Our purpose is not merely to report what happened. It is to clarify why it matters: who makes the decision, how public resources are affected, what options exist, what the public record shows, and how residents can engage through lawful, constructive civic channels.
Our Vision for Simi Valley
We envision a Simi Valley in which public institutions are transparent, public resources are carefully stewarded, residents can readily understand the decisions made in their name, and civic participation is informed by facts rather than rumor or spin.
The Simi Valley Ledger is committed to independent local reporting that serves the public interest. We will pursue facts, scrutinize power fairly, elevate issues that deserve attention, and provide a trusted forum for community accountability.

We invite Simi Valley residents, community organizations, public servants, local businesses, and civic leaders to read, share, submit tips, provide documents, and participate respectfully in the public conversations that shape our city. Strong local democracy depends on an informed community—and local accountability begins with the truth.
